A Story About Steve

I stood behind Steve in the lunch line in Cupertino one day. He was in the desert line; I thought I was just in a line to make it in to the cafe. He called to his pal. "Hey, Jony!"

It was Jony Ive. Steve chose a slice of pie.

A few days later, I was sitting outside the cafe at Apple's campus. I was at a small seat with a few other colleagues. The sun was out, it was a perfect August day in Silic

on Valley. 75ยบ and sunny, a few puffy white clouds against the bondi blue sky.

Steve and Jony walked by. Both had a tray full of lunch, looking for a place to sit, outside, just like we all did that day.

The two greatest minds in technology design, charisma, marketing and mystery.

And neither of them can find a place to sit for lunch.

As much as I wanted to, I wanted to give up my chair. But that wasn't the culture, Everyone knew Steve was just a guy. Steve wanted to eat lunch with his pal. He's really just a guy like you and me, jeans and all.

When I was finished with my lunch, I got up, went and placed my lunch tray on the conveyor belt that most cafeterias have to make the lunch disposal easier. I made my way back outside, down the same path I was on when I saw Steve and Jony stride to find a place to talk about the future over lunch.

A few steps down the that path I saw Steve and Jony laughing and smiling together. Having lunch together, perhaps talking about the next thing.

I looked at Steve. He looked at me. I smiled. He smiled back.

That was it.

That was it.

I've been with Apple eight years and I doubt anything will top that. I've been using his products for 24 years and a fan of his personality as well as his distortion field ever since. I've loved his personality and his sharpness.

He demanded perfection and excellence and the right thing for all of Apple's customers.

Think Differently.

Think.

Thanks.
